Being a stay-at-home mom can be tough. No two days are the same, you will never know what is waiting for you in a day, and it can be very hard to meet new people, especially if you have small children who don't always give you your privacy.
Now, I'm not saying that being a stay-at-home mom isn't fun! On the contrary, it's a wonderful experience, and no mom would trade it for the world. However, there are definitely things that can make being a stay-at-home mom a little easier.
There are many ways to get out of the house, but working from home is just as good and, in some cases, better than getting an outside job. Whether you want to become a career writer, blogger, or just want to make some money on the side, there is plenty of work-from-home ideas for moms.
Work From Home Ideas for Moms
1: Become a Freelancer
Freelancing is one of the best work-from-home ideas out there. You can do it part-time or full-time, and you can make a lot of money doing it. The best thing about freelancing is that you get to be your own boss, so you'll never have to deal with a mean boss again!
If this interests you, you can find great freelancing insights in my post; what is freelance writing?
As a freelancer, some of the services you can offer include SEO writing services, copywriting, translation, graphic designs, web design and development, software development, social media management, etc.
2: Become a Virtual Assistant
Virtual assistant work is another popular option for stay-at-home moms. Virtual assistants are basically like personal assistants that people can hire online.
As a VA, you can help your clients with social media marketing, phone calls, email correspondence, organizing things, travel plans, etc. There's really no limit to what you can help your clients with.
If being a virtual assistant interests you, read more about it in my guide on starting a virtual assistant business from home.
3: Write an eBook, and write some more
Writing and selling eBooks online has become very popular these days. And why shouldn't it? You get to make money while working from home.
If you are a writer, and I'm sure most of the moms out there are writers in one way or another, then writing an eBook is definitely something you should consider doing.
Ebooks have a higher return on investment as they don't cost you much to produce besides your expertise and time.
All you need is some research on the topic and some time to type it all out. You do, however, need to spend some money in proofreading and editing your book before publishing it to avoid those glaring errors that the lazy writer's eye seems to always miss.
Once your first book is out, the only other thing you have to do is come up with and implement a great book marketing strategy. If you are publishing on sites like Amazon Kindle, then one book might not be enough to get you noticed. So instead, try short reads, and roll out a series.
4: Sell Your Artwork Online
While not all of us have a way with words, some moms have a way with their hands. If you are a talented artist, then there's no reason why you shouldn't try selling your artwork online for extra income.
Some of the things you can sell include:
- Pencil works
- custom designs
- Wall arts etc.
5: Sell Custom Apparels with Print on Demand Services
Print-on-demand services are quickly becoming one of the most popular online business ideas to start from home
These days almost everyone needs clothes, and with print-on-demand businesses like CafePress and Printify booming, there is a lot of money to be made in this business model.
All you've got to do is just set up your account, choose the apparel type, create trendy designs, list them and start marketing your products.
Once someone buys one of the items you design, the print-on-demand company will handle everything, including printing the product, shipping, and returns. This way, you don't even have to spend money upfront. You get to keep a commission on each sale for as long as that design is available in their catalog.
You can sell t-shirts, sweatpants, leggings, joggers, and other fashion items, including tot bags and hats.
Some of the best print on demand services include:
6: Become a Reviewer
If you love reading and reviewing books, then why not try monetizing your passion?
There are several book sites out there that pay reviewers for things that they already do.
You can choose the genres and topics of books that interest you or opt for reader's advisory work, which will allow you to review a book before someone else reads it.
As a book reviewer, you are usually expected to read and review the book of your choice, which you can then publish on your own blog.
Some sites pay a flat fee, while others give royalties based on how many books have been sold. You can even opt for both payment methods if they offer them.
Some of the sites that will pay you to review books include:
You can also sell your book review services on freelance marketplaces like Upwork and Fiverr
7: Become an Online Tutor or a Virtual Teacher
Teaching is another option that stay-at-home moms can use to make money from home.
While you can work as a private tutor, it may be easier to start by working for an online tutoring platform like VIPKid or Chegg Tutors.
Some job sites that hire teachers include:
The best thing about teaching online is that you can work from anywhere. All you need is a reliable internet connection and a laptop or PC.
8: Create Information Products and Sell Them Online
If you have a skill set, information or an idea that is helpful to others, then consider turning it into downloadable products and selling them online.
This way, you can make money while helping people solve their problems and at the same time improve the lives of others. You can sell your info products in bundles or individually.
Some examples of information products that sell well online include:
- Industry reports
- Video tutorials
- Online courses
There are several platforms that make it easy to sell digital products and include Sendowl, E-junkie, Thrive Cart and WWooCommerce.
9: Start a Niche Blog
Blogging is a great way to make money online because you can do it on your own time from anywhere.
Plus, you don't need any special skills to blog, just knowledge about the topic that interests you and some basic content writing skills.
To start a blog, all you have to do is choose a profitable niche that interests you, grab web hosting, install WordPress, design your blog and start publishing articles. For step-by-step help, read my guide on how to start a blog.
As a blogger, you can earn money by selling your own products (digital or physical), displaying ads, or promoting other people's stuff for commissions.
While it takes time to build a profitable blog, once it is established, it can continue to generate passive income without much input on your end.
